Stocktaking list

In June 2009 a small black-covered notebook (D4(m)) was discovered in the Safe Room at Bromley House.
It measures 4.6 inches by 5.1 inches (11.8 cm x 18.1 cm) and is about 0.4 inches (8 mm) thick.
Its pages are lined and its contents date from 1896 through to 1901.

The front page is headed ‘Stocktaking May 1896’ and the book is primarily a record of that stocktaking.
The Librarian and his assistants will have worked their way through the accessions book and along the shelves noting down missing titles and their catalogue numbers.
These were then matched to known borrowings and the borrower’s name recorded along with a date, presumably the date on which the book had been borrowed.
A second date was added when the book was returned.
This is the first evidence of specific borrowings by named subscribers.

The booklet also contains the Librarian’s Memos for various meetings:

The Librarian has reused a number of Library loan slips.
These are almost identical with those still in use today, carrying the accession number of the book (top right), a number identifying the borrower (top left) and a date (beneath the other items). Slips were reused by inverting them

The information on these issue slips is as follows:
Identity

114 Dc 3745 24/12

Dc 343 28/11

Another insert is a Library loan slip on which is written a draft of a notice to subscribers:
Stocktaking
By order of the Committee I am instructed to inform you that a stocktaking is to be made at the library. You are requested to return all books exclusive of London Library books by July 1st subject to a fine of 2/6 per  vol kept beyond that date. Books will be reissued on Monday July 17/99.

Gas accounts
The rear of the notebook contains details of gas accounts.

It is of interest to note how the conversion from 2s 6d per 1000 cubic feet to pounds is accomplished by division by 8.
